Exploring Hell. 🔥 Are you up for the challenge? ⁣ ⁣ With a surface temperature in excess of 840 degrees Fahrenheit and a surface pressure 92 times that of Earth, Venus can turn lead into a puddle and crush a nuclear-powered submarine with ease. ⁣ ⁣ It’s an EXTREME world … and we’re calling on YOU to help us explore it! ⁣ ⁣ @NASAJPL is running a public challenge to develop an obstacle avoidance sensor for a possible future Venus rover. Tonight, count the stars and remember a trailblazer. We're saddened by the passing of celebrated mathematician Katherine Johnson. Her spirit and determination helped lead us into a new era in space exploration, and for that we are grateful. Once a "human computer", she famously calculated the flight trajectory for Alan Shepard, the first American in space. And when we began to use electronic computers for calculations, astronaut John Glenn said that he’d trust the computers only after Johnson personally checked the math. Her calculations proved as critical to the success of the Apollo Moon landing program and the start of the Space Shuttle program, as they did to those first steps on the country's journey into space. We celebrate her 101 years of life and honor her legacy of excellence that broke down racial and social barriers. What does Katherine Johnson’s legacy mean to you? A Trifecta at Twilight 🛰️🌘 🔴 On February 18, 2020, as civil twilight began in Northern New Mexico, a waning crescent Moon, the planet Mars and the International Space Station shared a well-planned single field of view. Talk about perfect timing! If you look closely, the yellowish glow of the Red Planet is in the frame at the upper right, beyond the Moon's dark edge. With little contrast between the spiraling arms of stars, gas and dust, and less dense areas in between, this spiral galaxy appears as unassuming as a smudged fingerprint on the sky, yet, just as exceptional. “Anemic galaxies” like this one contain only small quantities of the raw materials needed to produce stars. But, despite its subtlety when compared to its brash, spotlight-stealing relatives, it retains an otherworldly charm, standing out gracefully from the surrounding darkness of space. Even star systems have identity crises. 🤷⁣ ⁣ According to data from observatories like our @nasachandraxray , a double star system has been rapidly flipping between two alter egos: a low-mass X-ray binary and a millisecond pulsar. Astronomers found this volatile double system in a dense collection of stars known as Terzan 5.⁣ ⁣ The first image from @NASAHubble shows Terzan 5 in optical light. Swipe to see the new image where low, medium and high-energy X-rays detected by Chandra are colored red, green and blue respectively. How much water does Jupiter really have? 🤔⁣ ⁣ In Roman mythology, the god Jupiter drew a veil of clouds around himself to hide his mischief. It was only Jupiter's wife, the goddess Juno, who could peer through the clouds and reveal Jupiter's true nature. ⁣ ⁣ Our @NASAJuno spacecraft is looking beneath the clouds of the massive gas giant, not seeking signs of misbehavior, but helping us to understand the planet's structure and history...⁣ ⁣ Now, @NASAJuno just published its first findings on the amount of water in the gas giant’s atmosphere. An accurate total estimate of this water is critical to solving the mystery of how our solar system formed. Click the link in bio for more. 👀⁣ ⁣ Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS/Kevin M. Pluto still has our heart 💙⁣ ⁣ 90 years ago today, astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto! Flip through to see some of its majestic features. ⁣ ⁣ 📷 2: Pluto’s mysterious icy heart which contains three kinds of ices – frozen nitrogen, methane and carbon monoxide. ⁣ ⁣ 📷 3: The smooth expanse of the informally named icy plain Sputnik Planum (right) flanked to the west (left) by rugged mountains up to 11,000 feet high. ⁣ ⁣ 📷 4: Pluto in true color. Four images from our New Horizons' Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) were combined with color data from the Ralph instrument to create this global view of Pluto. ⁣ ⁣ Image Credit: NASA / JHUAPL / SwRI⁣ ⁣ #NASA #Pluto #Planets #Love #SolarSystem #OTD

A postcard from the edge of space. These electric-blue clouds are only visible when the Sun is below the Earth's horizon and illuminates them. Pictured from 269 miles above the South Pacific on an orbiting International Space Station, noctilucent clouds, or night shining clouds, are the highest clouds in the Earth's atmosphere. A Cygnus takes flight! 🦢 🚀 Northrop Grumman's Cygnus spacecraft launched today on a mission to deliver supplies to @iss. Lifting off from our Wallops Flight Facility ( @nasawallops ) in Virginia, the spacecraft is carrying over 7,500 pounds of cargo and scientific investigations, including a new miniature scanning electron microscope, a tissue and cell culturing facility and a study of the effects of microgravity on bacteriophages. On Tues., Feb. 18, it will arrive at the space station. Astronauts Andrew Morgan and Jessica Meir will use the Canadarm2 robotic arm to reach out and grapple the spacecraft. "Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us." – Carl Sagan A newly processed version of the iconic ‘Pale Blue Dot’ image shows Earth 4 billion miles away from our Voyager 1 spacecraft, taken on #ValentinesDay 1990. The updated image uses modern image-processing software and techniques while respecting the intent of those who planned the image. Like the original, the new color view shows Planet Earth as a single, bright blue pixel in the vastness of space. Rays of sunlight scattered within the camera optics stretch across the scene, one of which happens to have intersected dramatically with Earth. So fresh, so clean 😎⁣ ⁣ This sleek piece of hardware you’re looking at is the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD). On Jan. 22, the mission shipped from @NASAGoddard to @NorthropGrumman for integration into the @USAirforce Space Test Program Satellite 6.⁣ ⁣ #LCRD is our first optical relay and will demonstrate the extraordinary capabilities of optical, or laser, communications! For #Artemis missions to the Moon, missions to Mars and beyond, optical communications will play a key role in bringing more science and data back to Earth – as well as enable astronauts to phone home! ⁣ ⁣ 📸: NASA/Chris Gunn⁣ ⁣ #SpaceTech #Sleek #Fresh #NASA #Space #Moon #artemis
