I was not really expecting to come back from Myanmar with some animal pictures, but here we are. I found this funny monkey during my Zwekabin hike (as I mentioned in the post before) and I spent around 15 minutes trying to communicate with her (yes, I talk with animals using a tiny weird voice) and observing her movements.
I realized it was a while that I was not posting animals shots: I wouldn’t define me an animal photographer, but the first real photo trips I have ever done in my life were the safaris in Tanzania, Namibia and South Africa (I was really hoping to get my way into NatGeo but of course it didn’t happen). It is extremely difficult to be a good wildlife photographer, not only you have to find good camera settings, but I believe you need to be able to convey the “spirit” of the animal, capturing a movement, an intention, an expression. One of the easiest way to do so, it is waiting till the subject is looking at you. If you scroll down my feed you will notice that my most successful animals portrait are the ones where the eyes can drag all your attention. It is indeed true that the eyes are the mirror of the soul. Of course if you add other elements in the composition, this is not a necessity.
Another good tip I can give is not to shoot manual at the beginning but to use time (T) priority. Especially in safaris, animals are moving fast, so it’s better an underexposed picture, but shot fast, than a shaky one. It is better not to go below 1/500 for shutter speed.
Hope you found this tips useful and don’t forget that practice is the key.
