EMMENTALER HOUSING BLOCK, MEXICO CITY | This well-preserved colonia-typology dates from the end of the 19th century. It was built by a local businessman, who wanted to offer decent homes for his employees in accordance to his religious beliefs. The spatial concept is both simple as impressive: a huge monoblock divided only by three private and quiet streets, in contrast to the wide and noisy streets and boulevard that surround the block. Along these communal passages a range of U-shaped patio apartment typologies were built, resulting in a morphological whole that is a bit reminiscent of an Emmentaler cheese. It is a big luck that this enclave stood the test of time so well...not least because this part of the city still suffers deterioration after the 1985 Mexico City Eartquake.
