My clean and jerks from Masters World Championships in Montreal, the good, bad, and the ugly. More appropriately the ugly bad, and the good. In my competitive experience, close to 18 years, I’ve never failed to rack my first clean. I have now! It was a bit of a surprise as the weight was a conservative opener. I wasn’t anywhere near top shape and it had showed glaringly in the snatch, but I’m always ready to at least get this much weight, 120 kilos, up to my shoulders. A I stood there with the weight still in my hands there was definitely a WTF running through my head. The weight did feel awkward as I had begun my first pull, and ended too far forward for me to rack it. When I set up for my second attempt, I noticed some movement of the bar. The platform had some peaks and valleys, and I repositioned the bar where it sat stable. Easy clean and jerk after that. On my third lift I also found a stable spot for the bar before beginning my pull. I don’t show it here to keep the video short, but as I squat down and get my grip set the bar moves. I let it go and it rolls forward about 6 inches. I then move more to the front of the platform which is much more flat. Good lift with 125 kilos, or 275 pounds. I had planned on 5 kilos more, but the 125 kilos was more than enough to win. 8/7/19 training in the garage. I’ve barely training in the garage gym all year, mostly training others here. Couldn’t get down to @american.strength this evening, so at home it was. I’m definitely not used to the heat, but felt pretty good none the less. I live streamed my snatches, and was pretty cooked by power cleans and push press. Weights were 100 kilos, 105, and 3 at 110. Got the whirlies on the last 3 singles. A little dehydrated from the heat, a little from low carb high protein. last Saturday’s training at @american.strength. Power Snatched up to 92 kilos well enough. Went back down to 85 for a pile of singles, working on my start. I went back to a pump set ( not sure what else to call it) vs the rolling start I’ve used for a while now. Rolling start is easier on my hip, while the pump start has my hips lower at the beginning of the pull. Result is I catch the bar better, less stepping out to secure the weight overhead. I did a lot of push pressing. Getting a little stronger each week. I worked up to 110kl here, and finished with 100kl for a set of 4. I did several sets of overhead squats between power snatch and push press, so was pretty happy I had some shoulder strength left. 7/13/19 training at @american.strength. I had the gym to myself at first, as the powerlifters were at regionals. Training went well enough. Jerks were weak, but I expected that after a heavy pressing session two days previous. Power c&j up to 120 kilos, no jerk with 123. Cleaned 125 and 127 kilos easily enough. I have 36 days until I compete in Montreal. 6/18/19 training highlights at @american.strength. Weights were moving good, and went heavier than I have in quite a while. I totally fluffed a 130 kilo power clean, pulled my shit together and went back and made it just fine, prompting a good single with 133 kilos (293 pounds). Caught one push press with 100 kilos for the camera, but solidly worked my way up to 110. My hip wasn’t a distraction, which was cool. Yesterday was so much fun! Over the past twelve weeks I’ve been preparing for this meet — fixing technique, getting stronger, and gaining confidence. . The result yesterday was a 141kg total (ties my second best competition total from two years ago), 64kg snatch (competition PR), and 77kg clean and jerk (recent best). I attempted 80kg, and couldn’t get out of the hole on the clean... time to get back to squatting. 😊💪🏼 . Thank you @icki84 and @gojhsia for running the show in the back and front rooms and making sure we were all prepped and ready at the meet (and before). . What an amazing day! . I had the opportunity to compete for Twin City Barbell and @chopstick_barbell at the Minnesota LWC Championships yesterday. . Thanks to @icki84 and the energy at @timberwolfcrossfit and all of my adrenaline, I managed to go 6/6 and crush some recent meet and training PRs — in a new lower weight class for me (64kg). . I went 54/58/61 in the snatch and then 68/72/75 in the clean and jerk for a 136kg total. Good enough for 3rd place in my weight class and 13kg up from the MN Open in October as a light 71kg lifter. . Thanks to everyone who came out to cheer and support, to @gojhsia for crushing the announcing and organizing and DJing, to the loaders for each session (the real MVPs), to the judges for keeping things fair ⚪️⚪️⚪️, and to @timberwolftony for the beautiful platform and for hosting the meet. Had a fabulous time competing in the AO1 at the Arnold Sports Festival. I went in under less than ideal conditions: I had been working excessively, sleeping very little, left hip crabby after a 15 hour drive, 8:30 pm session, and little food or drink before 6:30 weight in. I’ve no real idea what I’m prepared to do, other than the best I can do. After weight in I start shoveling in food and drink. The Sports Festival is basically a smorgasbord of free samples, so I have no problem getting fed. Eventually it’s time to warm up. Im first out on the platform on both the snatch and clean and jerk. First time ever for that. Being the oldest on the platform by 11 years, I took it as an age before beauty thing. I had kind offers to load the bar for my warm ups, but I declined. The activity of loading goes pretty far in helping me loosen up. By now I’m pretty excited to lift. I love competing. The excitement in the warm up area, the anticipation of things to come fuels me. I’m lifting at the Arnold’s, lifting to put up a qualifying total for world masters, lifting because I love doing so. Adrenaline wipes away the stiffness , the bad left hip, the stress of work and little sleep, and all the etceteras. I’m only truly competing against myself as the lone 55 to 59 102kl class entrant, but I watch the board like a hawk. This is the 102B session. I get a charge when I out total younger lifters, and there are several in the session that I out lift. I know they have years ahead of them to improve. I hope being out-lifted by a man easily old enough to be their father (but not quite old enough their grandfather) makes them pause. I go 6 for six in the comp and have a blast doing it. Snatch: 92, 96, 102. Clean and jerk 123,126,130 kilos. Worked up to some potential openers 120 c&j 93 snatch on the 20th, went back on the 21st for a little more snatching. Totally derped 94 and took the weight for a stroll. It was ok. all weights previous were spot on. 2/16/19 training at American Strength Training Center. I’ve 1 weeks until I lift at AO1 at the Arnold’s. Overworked, underslept, haircut badly needed, Batman/Superman t-shirt one size too small, but the Training was good. I felt more explosive than I have been feeling, and moved rapidly up through the weights. 128 kilos was easy, but first single with 130 slid off my right shoulder. When I miss a weight I know I should make, I repeat it ASAP. Next lift I made but still a bit off, then three singles after that we’re positive. A couple sets of deadlifts that ended with the 168 kilos. A few months ago this would have been too painful to do, but my hip continues to progress in the positive. Training from 2/2/19 @american.strength . Top power cleans of 128 and 130 kilos ( 286 pounds). Push press triple with 105 kilos and singles with 110 and 113 kilos( 250 pounds). Body weight 97.5 kilos. Signed up to compete at the American Open 1 at the Arnold, end of February, as a 102 kilo lifter. Decided not to starve myself into the 96 kilo class. Not enough time to lose the weight and be strong at the same time. Training from 1/11/19 at American Strength Training Center. Coach Charlie replaced the old bumpers with new Vulcan bumpers, as well as Rogue jerk blocks. Definitely the funnest part of the training. I’m dieting to make weight and get down to 96 kilos by end of February. Strength was low, speed was essential to make the lifts. Everything felt heavy. First time jerking weight in close to a year. Worked up to a top weight of 123 kilos or 270 pounds on both power cleans and jerks. Had on a new Bruce Lee shirt courtesy of my friend Tong. First snatch session in 5 weeks, lifting 95kilos. Not bad, but certainly not good. A great place to retool. 10 kilos off my best meet lift of 105k at National Masters. Maybe I can pull out more this year. Hip functioning better will definitely help. Currently also locked down in weight loss mode. I’ve got to shed about 10 pounds to comfortable compete at 212 or 96 kilos. Topped out at 222, down to an even 218 today. Teaching my son how to work towards a handstand, so decided I had better lead by example. When I was decades younger ( I’ll be 56 in February), considerably lighter, and with less bone spurs in my wrists they were easy. Looks like I have some work to do. Some highlights from training at American Strength Training Center on 11/17/18. Power cleans with 123, 127, 130, and 134 kilos ( 295 pounds). The final lift is 91 percent of my best power clean of 147. I’m heading in the right direction. Hang snatch high pulls with 120 kilos and a single push press with 107.
