9 days, 4 of them spent in museums and I wish I did more.
I cry often in front of a painting; when hearing its story or just randomly. I’m happy and inspired like a child. It’s a form of soul communication, I don’t know how to explain this. I get the same effect with cinema, I’m a real weeping mess when I like a film.
Now that I’m learning sketching, it took this experience to another level.
On this trip, I decided to sketch two paintings: The first is Van Gogh’s ‘The Shoes’ for its empathetic and dignified portrayal of poverty.
The second is Jacob Lawrence’s ‘They were very poor’ from a 60-panel Migration Series. A depiction of the challenging living conditions of African Americans’ exodus to northern cities during and after WWII. When I first saw part of this series 3 years ago; this image never left me. A family, head down broken by misery, with very few resources and this sentence that says it all: ‘they were very poor’. It killed me.
We often take these details for granted ... I’m not an expert in art, never claimed to be one, I go by instinct. I stop, listen, research what speaks to my soul, and like a river it flows from one thing to the other. There’s some mysterious magic in the flow of flânerie, to wander with no purpose sometimes.
I’m happy and grateful that my last day of 2019 has been spent in one of my favorite museums MoMA The Museum of Modern Art charging myself with inspiring energy, It’s what keeps me going... May you find inspiration in every step of the way. 💜 ✨
