Designed by award-winning architects Powell & Moya, the L-shaped pool at Putney Baths is thought to be the first of its type built in the 1960s. This shape allowed diving to take place even while the main pool was in use, removing the need for a separate diving pool and making it cheaper to construct and operate. The V beams of the ceiling are not only visually appealing but also conceal the lighting and ventilation services.
This photograph is currently on display alongside other photographs, original drawings, models and film footage in Into the Blue, a @vamuseum + @RIBA Architecture Partnership display on the architectural, cultural and social history of swimming in the UK. See it for free at the V&A until April 2020.
